The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) was part and parcel of the third edition of the first lady half marathon. The Authority was represented by a team of ten staff from NEMA headquarters.
The marathon took place in Nairobi, Nyayo stadium on Sunday of March 6, 2016. The 10KM race which the Authority participated in kicked off at 8am. This was the same category of marathon that the First Lady, Margaret Kenyatta participated among other dignitaries.
Beyond Zero Campaign is a foundation formed by the First Lady of Kenya, Margaret Kenyatta in conjunction with the government of Kenya with the main aim of reducing maternal and child mortality by establishing 47 mobile clinics in all the counties.
The high-level event that targeted to raise a total of Sh105 million, saw thousands of participants register for the marathon including various county government officials, civil society leaders, diplomats and corporates. The race categories included 21km, 10 km and 2km.
Amongst the personalities who graced the occasion were The First Lady of Rwanda – Jeannette Kagame and her team from Rwanda, Deputy President of Kenya – William Ruto and his wife. Inspector General Joseph Boinett, who said that it is good for people to live healthy lives and the marathon, was one way of ensuring the same.
The State House spokesman, Esipisu Manoah, who was also present completed the ‘2km Wazee Fun Run’ said that in order to successfully complete marathons in future, all participants should ensure that they have enough time set aside to train. He also added that cohesiveness and organization before engaging in a marathon is important.
Wilfred Kimitet and Valentine Kipketer were the winners of the third edition of First Lady Half Marathon.
