Launch of Strategic Plan

There was pomp and colour during the launch of NEMA’s fourth Strategic Plan 2019-2024 at Boma Hotel on 26^th September 2019.

During the launch, the Authority promised to make service better and implement the vision for a cleaner and healthy environment.

The new Strategic Plan is aligned to the Big Four Agenda of the government and Vision 2030. The plan offers clarity to the Authority’s vision, mission and strategies to enable NEMA better achieve its mandate.

The development and implementation of Strategic Plans in the public sector in Kenya is a critical pillar of the Results Based Management adopted by the Government since 2004. This enables the government to focus on outputs and outcomes rather than inputs and processes.

The new Strategic Plan will therefore enable the Authority to focus on the following Key Result Areas (KRAs) in the next five years; Environmental quality, protection and conservation, ecological integrity of ecosystems, climate change, environmental governance and coordination, Green economy for sustainable development and institutional capacity.

The Chief Guest was Chief Administration Secretary, Mr. Mohammed Elmi who represented the Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko. In his statement, the CS emphasized that the ministry is committed to supporting NEMA in undertaking its mandate and Strategic Plan.

The CS challenged NEMA to ensure that the environment is protected for the benefit of present and future generations in accordance with the principles of sustainable development stipulated in Article 10 of the Constitution. “I am pleased to note that the NEMA Strategic Plan for the period 2019-2024 has taken into consideration actions required to meet the global commitments and national priorities, and supplementing efforts being spearheaded by the Ministry,” the CS said.

Environment and Forestry PS was represented by the Secretary of Administration at the ministry, Joel Kitili. The PS noted that the Strategic Plan captured some of the strategies and projects aimed at addressing the environmental challenges in the country. The PS promised to support NEMA in the implementation of the strategic plan so as to meet the aspiration of Constitution of Kenya for a clean, secure and healthy environment.

Speaking during the launch, NEMA Chairman John Konchellah noted that the proposed programmes in the Strategic Plan will enhance environmental management and ensure a clean, healthy and sustainable environment for all. “The Board will ensure the successful implementation of the Strategic Plan and in particular, implement resource mobilization strategies to enhance its financial base and undertake restructuring for effective operations and service delivery,” Konchellah noted.

On his part, NEMA Ag. Director General, Mamo B. Mamo appealed to all stakeholders and development partners to support programmes in the strategic plan in order to help create a sound environment management regime.
