NEMA-ASARECA Partnership
The National Environment Management Authority NEMA) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in East and Central Africa ASARECA) on 9th June 2009. In this regard NEMA is to be part of a larger team implementing a project dubbed BASE (Best Bets for Agro-diversity in Savanna Ecosystems). This project is to run in both Kenya and Tanzania between October 2009-December 2010. The research team is comprised of government organizations from Kenya and Tanzania. Greater Mara region (i.e. both inside and outside the park) 2. Serengeti National Park and its immediate surrounding Issues to be addressed Livelihoods, land use types & practices, and biodiversity conservation (define Biodiversity as the variety and number of living organisms) AIM The study aims to assess land use patterns of the Mara and Serengeti and ultimately use scientific methods to identify the best land management practices for improved livelihoods and biodiversity conservation. APPROACH: participatory approaches to be used including constant stakeholder consultations and stakeholder validation of outcomes BENEFITS • Improved family incomes through adoption of appropriate land use types management practices • facilitate uptake in terms skills development for environmentally friendly practices, information and expert advice to stakeholders • improved biodiversity conservation Progress Project planning meeting took place on 25th August 2009 in Nairobi Reconnaissance survey (Kenya and Tanzania) took place between 23rd September -8th October 2009 Stakeholder workshop in Narok Kenya on 15th October 2009 Stakeholder workshop in Mugumu, Tanzania 19th October 2009 Click here to download documents  Participants at inception workshop |
