The Establishment

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is established by Section 7 of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA), No. 8 of 1999 to ensure sustainable management of the environment through exercising general supervision and coordination of all matters relating to the environment and to be the principal instrument of Government in the implementation of all policies relating to the environment.

Mandate

The object and purpose for which NEMA is established under EMCA is twofold: to ensure sustainable management of the environment through exercising general supervision and coordination over matters relating to the environment and; to be the principal instrument of government in the implementation of all policies relating to the environment.

NEMA offers a wide variety of licenses and permits based on the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) CAP 387 by mainstreaming environmental and social safeguards in all projects, plans, programs and policies.
